Pictured: (1) Leonora C. Quill (educator) (2) Eleanor R. Quill, (child of Deaf Educator) and a child who was profoundly deaf herself, in a classroom with the combined support of the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana Schools, and the National AG Bell Association.
These two ladies, Leonora and Eleanor, are not only inspiration for what is being presented for consideration and implementation, hence the namesake, they are real-life examples of when you work at something and do it well, the outcomes overflow. In the right spirit, The Quill Model aims to demonstrate that services like these depicted in the photo, with three communication options and access to grade-level content, are just the beginning of a purposeful and outcomes-based relationship with the community. Knowing the challenges makes it almost impossible for most districts to accomplish a true language intensive environment for students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. These challenges exist for many reasons – resources, a critical mass of students, and available teachers with background and training, as well as trained individuals and adult role models who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing to model naturally communication in the environment. Therefore, to provide the perfect foundation of language intensity, academic content, technology, social and executive functioning skills, The Quill Model strives to be a bridge that addresses LEAD-K in action.
Mariann Carter, child of deaf adult (Eleanor), pictured above, has taken the work of two generations and brought it forth to be used in schools for the deaf, school districts, charter options and more.
